Wine Review Archive - Portugal Port

Churchhill 1991 Vintage Port ($65). Luscious and velvety, this port is showing full wild berry, cherry, and tobacco flavors, with a long, sweet, nutty finish. Ready now. (Splurge Wine, 01/01)

Cockburn

NV Ruby Port ($10). A reliable value choice, offering round, ripe fruit flavors, plenty of spice and sweet creme caramel notes and a velvety smooth structure. Try pairing with a cheese/dessert course by mixing chopped walnuts into the topping of your favorite apple crisp recipe, then serve with crumbly English farmhouse Cheddar or Canada's Black Diamond Cheddar. (Weekend Wine, 05/03)

1994 Late Bottled Port ($17). Rich and raisiny, this is an excellent wine. (Wine Tasting, 12/99)

NV Tawny Port 10 Years Old ($23). Medium bodied and nicely balanced. Great with food. (Wine Tasting, 12/99)

Dow's

2001 Vintage Port Quinta Senhora da Ribeira ($55). Concentrated and intense, with aromatic cassis and licorice notes that are layered with complex black fig, prune, toffee and coffee accents -- all folded together in a powerful, lingering package. Tempting now, particularly with at least an hour or two of decanting, but could stand cellaring for eight or ten years before opening. (Weekend Wine 08/06)

NV Tawny Port 20 Year Old ($50) with the Green Hill. Delicious! Sweet and sticky, with seductive burnt caramel, dried apricot, orange rind -- all delicately balanced, with a long, focused finish. Ready to drink now and over the next 3-4 years. (Weekend Wine 08/06)

NV Tawny Port 10 Year ($29). Pretty orange peel, cinnamon, caramel and toast accent this delicate, nutty Tawny. Silky smooth, with a lingering finish. Ready to drink now. (Winery Spotlight 12/05)

NV Trademark Reserve Ruby Port ($18). Ripe red berry flavors - strawberry and raspberry - are bright and racy, with appealing smooth spices and a dash of fresh herbal notes emerging on the moderate finish. (Winery Spotlight 12/05)

1997 Vintage Port ($60). A great buy at this price, this is incredible now and should be mind-blowing as it ages. Huge flavors, firm tannins, and a strong finish add up to a great vintage port. (Wine Tasting, 12/99)

1994 Vintage Port ($100). Powerful and intense, with concentrated prune and tobacco aromas and flavors layered with molasses and spicy oak. A big, masculine Port. Still could use some time in the bottle. Best after 2010. (Robyn's Picks 04/05)

NV Tawny Port 20 Years Old ($39). Huge wine. Intense. Sweet. Balanced. Nutty, creamy, figgy and intense. (Wine Tasting, 12/99)

Fonseca

1997 Vintage Port ($100). You cannot go wrong with a Fonseca vintage port. The '97 has received rave reviews from all corners. Buy it if you can find it. (Wine Tasting, 12/99)

1995 Late Bottled Port ($21). Fruity and easy to drink, featuring bright red berry and cherry fruit and a delicate spiciness. Pairs well with a wide range of desserts. Ready to drink now and over the next four or five years. (Splurge Wine, 02/02)

Graham

NV "Six Grapes" Reserve Porto ($22). Until now, we weren't entirely sure where this Port fit for us in the food-matching scheme of things. It's too light for a blue cheese moment. And it doesn't have the complexity that more sophisticated desserts demand. But for an assortment of sugary chocolates? It was perfect. Just a chocolate-covered cherry in a glass, really. Pick up a bottle now to go along with that box of Valentine's Day truffles that's just around the corner! Ready to drink now. (Picks & Nibbles 01/08)

NV Tawny Port 10 Year Old ($29). A classic -- offering lush layers of velvety red fruit, butterscotch, spice, orange zest, cake and roasted nuts. Long, lingering finish. A heck of a deal at this price. Ready to drink now and over the next 4-5 years. (Weekend Wine 12/05)

NV Ruby Port Six Grapes Reserve ($21). Overtly sweet, slightly simple, and heavy on the raisin character, but good acidity prevents it from being cloying. Ready to drink now. (Robyn's Picks 04/05)

NV Tawny Port 20 year old ($50). Classic Tawny, with lovely balance and flavors, including prune and rich caramel, dried berry and touches of orange rind. Finishes long and generous. Ready to drink now and over the next few years. (Robyn's Picks 04/05)

Osborne

NV Tawny Port 10 Year Old ($25). Pretty spice and nut aromas introduce smooth raisin and dried fruit flavors, along with cinnamon and other baking spices, caramel and praline accents. Finishes long and sweet, with just a touch of earthy, meaty character. Ready to drink now. (Weekend Wine 12/05)

2000 Vintage Port ($50). Ripe and jammy, with fresh spice aromas and accents to the solid core of black fruit. Not a blockbuster; medium bodied, with good structure and finish. Ready to drink now with a bit of decanting, or over the next five to eight years. (Weekend Wine 12/05)

1994 Late Bottled Port ($12). One heck of a price and delicious. Not as sweet as the name might suggest. (Wine Tasting, 12/99)

Quinta de Roriz 2002 Vintage Port ($52). Quite young at this stage, but opened up nicely after a little while, offering loads of lively red berry and plum fruit laced with generous orange rind aromas and flavors and finishing with a dusty, earthy quality. Nice acidity throughout. Tempting now, with some decanting; best after 2008. (Robyn's Picks 08/05)

Quinta do Vesuvio 2001 Vintage Port ($58). A big, prune-intensive baby at this stage - with loads of concentrated prune/plum and ripe berry, intense chocolate and spicy oak. Needs time to round out and gain integrated complexity. Best after 2010. (Robyn's Picks 04/05)

Ramos-Pinto NV Tawny Port 30 Years Old ($75). Wow - a blockbuster finish on this outstanding wine that is full of toasted brown sugar and nuts. Super sweet and silky. (Wine Tasting, 12/99)

Smith Woodhouse

1986 Tawny Port Colheita ($41). Elegant, with pretty aromas and plump, enchanting flavors. Fig, raisin, butterscotch, floral, great acid. Excellent complexity and a lingering, mouthwatering finish. (Robyn's Picks 04/05)

1990 Late Bottled Port Unfiltered ($27). This was our first taste of a Smith Woodhouse port, and we really liked it! Complex flavors include layers of concentrated red cherry, smoke, cinnamon, mocha, and cream. Well-structured. Generous finish. Ready to drink now and over the next seven or eight years. (Splurge Wine, 02/02)

Warre's 1992 Late Bottled Port Traditional ($23). Jammy fruit includes ripe plum and blackberry, with tobacco and smoke notes. Good structure and body. Lovely finish. Real bang for the buck here! Ready to drink now and over the next seven or eight years. (Splurge Wine, 02/02)
