Wine Review Archives: Italy: Sicily: Red

Planeta

2006 Sicilia La Segreta Rosso ($16). Appealing for its bright raspberry and red cherry aromas and flavors, with delicate cocoa powder and herbal notes that linger on the fresh finish. Food friendly red at a good price. Ready to drink now and over the next couple of years. A blend of Nero d'Avola, Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Franc. (Italian Connection 12/07)

2005 Sicilia Burdese ($39). A Cabernet Sauvignon (70%) - Cabernet Franc (30%) blend that offers heady blackberry, vanilla, roasted coffee bean, brown spice and mineral notes and a long, full-bodied finish. Ready to drink now and over the next four or five years.

2005 Syrah Sicilia ($39). Full bodied but elegant, with intense blackberry and currant flavors laced with aromatic spices, espresso, savory herbs and a touch of chocolate. Long, lush finish. Ready to drink now (though a little decanting would be nice) and over the next five or six years.

2004 Nero d'Avola Sicilia Santa Cecilia ($39). Rich plum, red berry and chocolate notes are supported by a balancing acidity. Medium-bodied with a juicy, lipsmacking finish. Ready to drink now and over the next couple of years. (Italian Connection 12/07)

2004 Merlot Sicilia ($39). Smooth and velvety, with blackberry and plum fruit laced with violet, vanilla and a touch of dusty chocolate that folds into the supple, long finish. Ready to drink now and over the next three or four years. (Italian Connection 12/07)
