Wine Review Archive - Australia, Sauvignon Blanc & Blends

Angove's 2001 Sauvignon Blanc South Australia Classic Reserve ($7). We tasted this in San Francisco and really liked it. It is just bursting with refreshing citrus and kiwi fruit, with appealing herbal grassy notes. Clean and bright. Not a spot of oak to be found. Pure fruit goodness. Ready to drink now. (ETFOFW 08/02)

Chain of Ponds 2001 Sauvignon Blanc Adelaide Hills Black Thursday ($13). Balanced and crisp, with tropical and light citrus fruit, mineral and grassy notes. Ready to drink now. (Bargain Wine, 02/03)

Devil's Lair 2004 Fifth Leg White Western Australia ($12). Absolutely crazy about this Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Chardonnay blend -- quite possibly the new "house " white here at the Wine Skinny! Crisp and refreshing and perfect on a hot day -- juicy, fragrant lime and lime zest runs throughout a pretty mix of apple and white nectarine, and stone notes. Really appealing and ready to drink now. (Weekend Wine 04/05)

Fox Creek 2001 Sauvignon Blanc South Australia ($15). Exuberant apple and citrus fruit race around the palate, picking up touches of pineapple, mineral and grassy notes. A fun wine. Ready to drink now. (Bargain Wine, 02/03)

Henschke 2006 Tilly's Vineyard Barossa ($20). A lithe blend of Semillon, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, offering juicy apple and hay character laced with citrus and fresh herbal notes. Ready to drink now. (Splurge Wine 02/08)

Leeuwin 2003 Sauvignon Blanc-Sémillon Margaret River Siblings ($20). Really liked this blend, with its fragrant grapefruit and juicy apple and pear flavors that pick up spice and herb accents. Appealing, lingering finish. Very refreshing. Ready to drink now. (Weekend Wine 08/05)

Lindemans 2001 Sauvignon Blanc South Eastern Australia Bin 95 ($8). Easy-going, with clean pear, melon, and citrus fruit along with simple grassy notes. Ready to drink now. (ETFOFW 08/02)

Oxford Landing 2001 Sauvignon Blanc South Australia ($8). Lively mix of juicy lime and smooth pear, with subtle but complex earth and grass notes. Ready to drink now. (ETFOFW 08/02)

Punt Road 2004 Sauvignon Blanc Yarra Valley ($20). Pungent and herbaceous, but balanced against lush tropical fruit and refreshing citrus. A complex wine, with an evolving finish that picks up a touch of gunflint. Ready to drink now. (World Wide Wine 01/05)

Ravenswood Lane 2006 Sauvignon Blanc Adelaide Hills The Lane ($30). A delicious, complex Sauvignon Blanc that earns its lofty pricetag, with elegant layers of aromatic citrus, lychee, subtle green herbal notes and a dash of mineral character. Concentrated, long finish. Ready to drink now. (Weekend Wine 04/08)

Shaw & Smith

2002 Sauvignon Blanc Adelaide Hills ($17). Refreshing lemon and lime fruit are balanced with smooth, light pear. Nice acidity and appealing herbal notes on the finish. Ready to drink now. Food pairing: Chicken Satays with a coconut and lemongrass dipping sauce. (Weekend Wine, 08/03)

2001 Sauvignon Blanc Adelaide Hills ($17). I had just read a brief article on this Australia winery the evening before, and then this wine appeared at the tasting. So I'll admit that I may not have gone into this one totally "blind" to its merits. But still. This is truly outstanding! Concentrated and focused fruit include bright pear and apple, with just enough citrus, vicious acidity, and subtle grass and herbal notes. Ready to drink now. Probably my favorite wine of the weekend. (Weekend Wine, 06/02)

2000 Sauvignon Blanc Adelaide Hills ($17) This wine was terrific and a great choice for the impending warmer Spring weather. Supple pear fruit balances with citrusy zip and a touch of herbal grassiness to make a thoroughly enjoyable wine with a solid finish. Ready to drink now. (Weekend Wine, 03/01)

Shelmerdine Vineyards 2004 Sauvignon Blanc Yarra Valley ($20). Nice price on a single vineyard wine (Lusatia Park Vineyard), offering tight acid supporting fresh flavors that include citrus, gooseberry and pea shoot, with a clean, flinty finish. Ready to drink now. (World Wide Wine 01/05)

Willow Bridge 2002 Sauvignon Blanc Semillon Western Australia ($10). Fresh and green, with juicy tropical fruit and interesting accents that include sweet pea and clover. Refreshing and easy to drink. Ready to drink now. (Weekend Wine, 03/03)

Xanadu 2002 Sauvignon Blanc Margaret River ($10). Really good, with zingy lime zest and juicy citrus acidity balanced with round, mellow pear. Good length. Mouthwatering total package! Ready to drink now. (Weekend Wine, 01/04)
