2004 Syrah Alto Maipo Floresta ($45). Bold and concentrated, with black currant and dark chocolate aromas and flavors layered with pretty spices and toasty vanilla. Lots of oak going on here, but the fruit is so intense that it all seems to balance out. Long, tightly wound finish. Ready to drink now and over the next four or five years. (Drinks with Les Dames 02/08)

Vina Montes 2007 Syrah Colchagua Valley Alpha Apalta Vineyard ($25). Seductively aromatic — brown spice, fleshy stonefruit, blueberry pie, then offers pretty, concentrated currant, red cherry, blueberry and wild strawberry fruit on the palate. Picks up clove, toast, cream, vanilla, fresh herbs and light peppery notes through the elegant finish. A lot of wine for the money. Ready to drink now and over the next 2-3 years.
