A to Z Wineworks 2003 Claret Oregon ($15). A blend of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Grenache and Malbec, this spicy, concentrated red offers black plum and currant fruit accented with smoke, white pepper and tobacco. Nice structure at this price. Ready to drink now. (Bargain Wine 06/07)

    Sokol Blosser

NV Meditrina Oregon 5th Edition ($15) is a blend of three grapes — Pinot Noir, Syrah and Zinfandel. Odd as it may sound, the blend actually works to create a smooth, juicy, food-friendly wine with slightly tart red cherry accents to the supply plum and red berry fruit. Ready to drink now. Locate this wine online or in your area. (2009-02-25)

NV Meditrina II ($18). If you thought Evolution was fun, you’re going to love Meditrina! A blend of Sokol Blosser Pinot Noir (48%), Syrah sourced from Lodi, California and Washington’s Columbia Valley (total of 39%) and a healthy dollop of Lodi Zinfandel — it sounds a little nuts, but it totally works. The rich, concentrated Syrah is smoothed out by the Pinot’s aromatic, floral elegance, with the Zin adding a spicy kick to the long, juicy finish. Somehow this all adds up to a quite feminine wine — in a Steel Magnolia, it’s a woman’s world after all kind of way. Ready to drink now and over the next couple of years. (Weekend Wine 03/06)

NV Meditrina ($18). A blend of Pinot Noir, Syrah and Zinfandel, this wine offers appealing complexity and layers, while maintaining a juicy richness. It is medium-bodied and smooth, with fresh red fruit character, a bit of warm spice and a surprising amount of structure — especially at just $18. It is perfect for pairing with just about any food, including all kinds of cheeses, not to mention salmon dishes, roasted chicken and more. We think it is a natural accompaniment to all the autumnal acorn squash and pumpkin dishes that this time of year brings. An ideal Thanksgiving red! (2005)
