Wolffer Estate 2001 Merlot The Hamptons Long Island Premier Cru ($125). We were excited to taste our very first New York wine — and what a way to begin! This is a limited production wine — only 283 cases of 6 bottles each (750 ml) were made. In addition, there are 96 bottles of 375 ml, 24 magnums, and seven three-liter bottles. The wine is a concentrated, deep red color, with a heady bouquet of floral-scented red fruit and tobacco. Rich red cherry, blackberry and plum fruit flavors offer layers of complexity, with accents that include cinnamon, white pepper and lots of toasty oak. A voluptuous wine that is wonderful now and should age beautifully over the next five or six years. (Weekend Wine 03/04)
