2000 Chardonnay Napa Valley ($45). Mayacamas‘ library release program is just one more reason to get hooked on this winery. Right now, they’re offering their 2000 Chardonnay, and it’s well worth the order. At this point, it’s really showing beautifully, with well-developed pear and apple character that is smooth and silky. 1997 Chardonnay Napa Valley ($32). Mayacamas is famous for a number of reasons, including the longevity of their wines, even the whites. This 1997 is no exception. It is another blockbuster Chardonnay. Rich, balanced, full of flavor – the pear is beautiful, and you’ll also find apple, a touch of melon, concentrated fig, hazelnut, vanilla, oak. Wow. 1996 Chardonnay Napa Valley ($N/A). Mayacamas always produces complex, long-lived wines. The Mayacamas Chardonnays also age well – better than most whites – and should be at least three to five years old before you drink them. Mer Soleil 1997 Chardonnay Central Coast (California, $40). Wow, this is a rich Chardonnay. The French gentleman standing next to me visibly blanched at his first sip – this is quite a different animal from any French Chardonnay. A true example of American winemaking style, this Chardonnay nearly overwhelms you with rich fig, pear, cream, vanilla, and pineapple. A clean, if definitely lingering, finish keeps it from being over the top. I’d drink this one now – I’m almost afraid of how much richness would be added by more age! – but it will age for at least three to five years. (Weekend Wine, 05/00)
