Archive: Bulgaria: White

Targovishte Winery 2003 Dry Muscat Balkan Hills ($8). A surprise tasting hit from an unexpected corner of the world, this Bulgarian white is very nice! With pretty floral notes lacing crisp, juicy apple. Quite flavorful, with a focused finish. Ready to drink now. (Weekend Wine 08/05)

Vini Winery 1999 Chardonnay ($7). You heard me, Bulgaria. A first for me, I have to admit. I’ll also admit that I wasn’t expecting greatness. As it happens, I recently read an article that was not exactly singing the praises of Bulgarian wines. But I received a few samples from Vini Winery, and decided to keep an open mind and start with the Chardonnay. A nice surprise! Well balanced, touches of oak and mineral, loads of sweet pineapple and melon. Heck of a deal and a great ready to drink snicksnack wine. (Weekend Wine, 10/02)
