Hugh Hamilton 2005 Viognier McLaren Vale Loose Cannon ($16). Fresh and floral, with bone dry, delicate flavors that include apricot and lime zest. Not an opulent style, like some Viognier, but intriguing for its nuanced, musk/floral character. Not sure about the “Loose Cannon” part — it seemed very “birds and bees” (and all that suggests) to me! Ready to drink now and over the next couple of years. Redbank’s 2006 Vigonier King Valley The Widow Jones ($18) was one of our July 4th day wines. The pretty melon and peach fruit is vibrant but not overripe, with a nice throughline of citrus that lingers on the finish. Ready to drink now.
