Weekend Wine

Sure we drink a lot of wine. It's our job! But what about on our own time? What do our editors choose to drink on the weekends, and how do they match up wine and food? Enough questions, how about some answers! Each week, we’ll update this page with the details of the wine, or wine and food pairings, our editors enjoyed over the weekend. Subscribe Free to our Weekend Wine email newsletter, and we'll deliver this column directly to you. How great is that?

Weekend Wine for May 5, 2008 -- Viognier with Thai Curry Takeout
Of all the takeout options available these days, Thai curry may be our very favorite. It travels well, reheats easily, and saves a ton of time versus a homemade curry. No matter what variation we're in the mood for -- often a duck green curry, but also red and yellow versions that include shrimp, chicken, beef or tofu -- Viognier is an easy pairing.

These are full bodied, silky, aromatic, tropical wines that offer the palate weight of Chardonnay, but with more of an apricot/peach fruit profile and, usually, less oak influence. Here are a few Viogniers from California that we've particularly enjoyed lately:

Bonterra 2006 Viognier Mendocino-Lake Counties ($18). Crisp and bright, with tropical melon flavors laced with mineral and floral notes that linger nicely on the mouthwatering finish. Ready to drink now. Locate this wine online or in your area.

Calera 2006 Viognier Mt. Harlan ($28). Ripe and lovely, with smooth peach and honeysuckle aromas and flavors, rounded out with pretty pear and mineral notes that linger on the full finish. Ready to drink now. Locate this wine online or in your area.

Chumeia Vineyards 2006 Viognier California ($14). Juicy, fresh peach and tangerine aromas and flavors linger through the finish, picking up some citrus zest along the way. Ready to drink now. Nice with a garlicky chicken curry. Locate this wine online or in your area.

Robert Hall 2007 Viognier Paso Robles ($21). Full bodied and aromatic, with ripe apricot, peach, orange blossom and touches of spice, citrus and cream. Appealing balance of lush and bright notes. Ready to drink now. Locate this wine online or in your area.

Zaca Mesa 2006 Viognier Santa Ynez Valley ($18). Bright, fresh white peach and crisp citrus mingle with ripe apricot, with just a touch of creaminess. Stays focused and fruity through the finish. Ready to drink now. Locate this wine online or in your area.

Cheers!
