Winery Spotlight -- Irony by DFW Wines

In the fall of 2007, longtime California winery Delicato Family Vineyards officially changed its name to DFV Wines. The move came in recognition of the growing portfolio of labels that the winery produces - from Delicato to Gnarly Head, 337, Irony Napa Valley, Clay Station, Twisted, Joe Blow, Bota Box, King Fish, and Loredona. There's even a French import, Chateau Maris.

The winery is still family-owned, with three generations of the Indelicato family creating wines for over eighty years. Gasparé Indelicato emigrated to California from Italy in 1912, bringing with him a family heritage of winemaking. By 1924, he had planted what would be the first of many vines in the family's California history. Gasparé's quality grapegrowing survived, if barely, the hard times of Prohibition and the Great Depression, and by 1935, he and his brother-in-law began producing wines.

Over time, Gasparé acquired additional acreage, and his sons Vincent, Frank and Anthony joined the business. Today, brothers Chris and Jay Indelicato stand as the third generation in the family business that has expanded to include vineyards across the State, from San Bernabe Vineyard in Monterey to Clay Station in Lodi.

We recently tasted DFV Wines' Irony line of wines. Named by Chris and Jay as a nod to their feelings at being happily back in the family business after post-college careers took them elsewhere, the Irony wines are impressive - particularly at price points of under $20 across the line. Here are our notes:

Irony 2005 Chardonnay Napa Valley ($14). A tasty little Napa Chardonnay at this price, with plenty of creamy richness and ripe tropical notes, but also some bright green apple fruit and acidity. The finish even shows a bit of complexity. Ready to drink now. Locate this wine online or in your area.

Irony 2005 Pinot Noir Monterey ($16). Nice, with smooth red cherry and raspberry notes accented with light cola, toast, spice and vanilla. Ready to drink now. Locate this wine online or in your area.

Irony 2005 Pinot Noir Russian River Valley ($18). Delicate and pretty, with moderate black cherry and berry fruit laced with mineral toast, light baking spices and a hint of vanilla. Ready to drink now and over the next couple of years. Locate this wine online or in your area.

Irony 2004 Merlot Napa Valley ($16). Lipsmacking, smooth red cherry and plum flavors, with appealing touches of briar and clove. Never gets overripe or syrupy -- a nice surprise for a Merlot at this price! Ready to drink now and over the next couple of years. Locate this wine online or in your area.

Irony 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley ($16). Aromatic violet, spice and red cherry introduce bright cherry and ripe red berry flavors that are accented with sweet tobacco and a touch of chocolate. Bright acidity on the finish. Ready to drink now and over the next couple of years. Locate this wine online or in your area.
