Past Issues: Tasting Bordeaux -- Margaux

Now we’re playing in the big leagues. We’re into fable and history and lore. Not to mention Frasier and the impressive price tags.

Marguax is red-wine only land, and generally speaking, the soil here is finer and lighter than other parts of Bordeaux. This results in wines with an elegance and finesse that make them highly prized as the grande dame of Bordeaux. Margaux wines are supposed to offer a bouquet of violet and are often thought of as the most feminine of Bordeaux's red wines.

We steadied ourselves, cleared a little credit space, and went shopping.

We were pleasantly surprised to find a range of prices – some firmly affordable, others gulp-worthy. Here’s what we scored:

Chateau Labegorce-Zede 2000 Margaux ($26)
Pavillon Rouge du Chateau Margaux 1999 Margaux ($40)
Chateau Rauzan-Segla 1999 Margaux ($45)
Chateau Palmer 1999 Margaux ($84)
Chateau Margaux 1999 Margaux ($140)

We’ll report back next issue with our tasting notes on these wines, as well as the introduction to the next part of our Bordeaux tasting. For that, we head upstream to another Left Bank appellation – Saint-Julien...
