Past Issues: Tasting Bordeaux -- Listrac & Moulis

Listrac and Moulis are neighboring appellations tucked between Saint-Julien and Marguax. Though situated on the left bank of the Gironde, they are farther inland and do not have the pure gravelly soil of the areas closer to the river. As a result, the wines can be heavier (Listrac) or have a more rustic quality (Moulis) than those of some of their more refined neighbors. But there is some good quality to be found here, especially in Moulis where the wines can be remarkably smooth and round. And there are good prices to be found in these areas as well. These wines do benefit from some bottle age; a good five or more years in the bottle make a big difference.

Here’s what we picked up for our next tasting:

Chateau Poujeaux 1998 Moulis ($29)
Chateau Maucaillou 1997 Moulis ($23)
Chateau Malmaison 1998 Moulis ($17)
Chateau Semeillan Mazeau 1997 Listrac ($15)

We’ll report back next issue with our tasting notes on these wines, as well as the introduction to the next part of our Bordeaux tasting – a name just about everyone is familiar with - Margaux...
