Past Issues:
Sommelier Pick, aug/sep 99 --
Elfisio Farris, Arcodoro, Houstoneptember
2003
Sommeliers are some of
our favorite people. The good ones can make
a good meal great. The great ones can open
your eyes to wine choices that you didn't
even know existed. They awe us with their
dedication; they inspire us with their imagination.
In each issue, the Wine Skinny will spotlight
one Sommelier who we think is doing a tremendous
job. For this issue, we've chosen:
If you love Italian wines
but haven't yet experienced the pure joy
of choosing a wine at Arcodoro, we highly
recommend it. The wine list is breathtaking.
Here are a few examples of the reds, by
wine list category:
Piedmont Reds: 1994 Barolo,
Fratelli Oddero, $78
Tuscan Reds: 1993 Chianti Classico Rancia
Riserva, Fattoria di Felsina, $86
Veneto Reds: For you special Amarone lovers
- you know who you are - a collection of
beautifully aged bottles (1967 anyone?)
Sardinia Reds: Cabernet Sauvignon, Marchese
di Villa Marina, Sella e Mosca, $82
If that doesn't get you interested,
we just don't know what will. And, if you
know anything about the release retail prices
of these wines, you know that we're not
talking about huge mark-ups. Very reasonable.
Very very tempting.
Farris is both restaurant
owner and sommelier. All too often, an otherwise
great restaurant owner falls short on the
wine list, but Farris is a glorious exception.
Speaking to the Wine Skinny from one of
his regular wine trips back to his native
Sardinia, Farris explains, "I visit
different Sardinian wineries and taste new
varietals to constantly upgrade and expand
our interest in promotion my native island
of Sardinia." This enthusiasm and dedication
certainly shows.
Farris also cellars a number
of bottles in Arcodoro's private cellar
and will add them to the wine list as they
achieve the necessary aging. We know we're
looking forward to a long and happy future
of wine list ecstacy at Arcodoro. Join us,
won't you?
