Review: Vue de Monde, Melbourne
Rock star chef meets foodie boutique -
Vue de Monde (yes, that's the correct spelling)
is alternately inspiring and exasperating.
After being seated at the only open table
in this cozy space, the 15-minute dissertation
on "how it works," delivered from
the "menu sommelier," left us
stunned and silenced. Seriously.

"How it works" (at dinner, anyway)
is that there is no menu. At least not one
that you are allowed to see. Theoretically
you chat with the menu sommelier about your
likes, dislikes, moods, allergies and tastes.
And then the food starts coming. Multiple
courses of carefully prepared and plated
dishes from Chef Shannon Bennett (imagine
a healthy, happy, fresh Kurt Cobaine) and
his team from their sometimes-raucous open
kitchen. Choose the wine yourself from the
list (which you are allowed to see)
or let the restaurant pair a different wine
with every course. Like most experiences
of this ilk, the courses ranged from merely
satisfactory to jaw-dropping and inspired.
Our table's menu included a standout classic
truffle risotto as well as a duck salad
with celeriac and apple remoulade, finished
with a mandarin sauce. The menu sommelier
turned out to be a delightful guy (we all
felt like old friends by the end of it),
and Vue de Monde is certainly thought provoking.
Well worth the experience!
