Restaurant Review - The Forge, Miami

This long-time Miami institution is the place to go for grilled dry-aged steaks. Elegant and ornate, if Miami has an old money crowd, this is where they gather.

Service is appropriately serious and mannered, making The Forge a welcome respite from the frenzy of Miami Beach. Not that The Forge isn’t a scene on it’s own – it is definitely a see-and-be-scene destination where the rich and famous lay down some big bucks for a classic dining experience.

The menu offers a long list of traditionally prepared steaks, chops, game, fish and birds. Diners who don’t want their meat fussed about with twelve different fused essences and froths will enjoy the straightforward preparations of high quality ingredients. From prime rib to file mignon, beef is the main thing. The signature "Super Steak" (a 16 oz. New York Strip) is an obvious choice – perfectly prepared, tender and flavorful. Grilled Florida snapper was a delicious alternative for the non-carnivore.

Not surprisingly, The Forge offers soufflés, specifically a chocolate and Grand Marnier flavored confection that is worth ordering in advance.

Enormous wine list (not to mention the reserve list) features page after page of upscale choices with impressive Bordeaux and Burgundy sections, plus top bottles from California, Rhone, Italy and more.

Your tab at The Forge won’t be light, but sometimes it takes some bucks to enjoy a classic. (december 2002)
