Muriels Jackson Square
is housed in a beautiful historic building
complete with balcony overlooking Jackson
Square. The antebellum mansion (with an
intriguing haunted, Anne Rice, lascivious
parlor goings-on flair) is a terrific
place to enjoy the seemingly endless and
definitely delectable food and wine served
up for lunch and dinner.
The wine list is seriously
tempting, with some fantastic choices
at every price level.
Weve sampled several
wonderful kitchen creations on our visits.
For starters, try the creamy and spicy
Shrimp Remoulade layered between
crispy cornmeal-coated fried green tomatoes.
Seared Foie Gras is served on a glistening
pool of cane jelly, with apple and watercress
garnishes. We werent feeling very
salad-y on our last visit, but I have
my eye on the baby lettuces with duck
confit and satsuma oranges for my next
visit!
Speaking of duck confit,
its all the French bistro touches
that make Muriels food so appealing.
Confit, cassoulet, even a daily charcuterie
board they all add a comforting
and classic backbone to the menu. Add
the New Orleans flair, and the results
are quite wonderful.
On the main course front,
an excellent off the menu salmon was perfection.
If beef is your thing, youll want
to savor the tournedos, served with goat
and blue cheese wontons, spinach, and
a cabernet-veal reduction. And under
no circumstances should you miss the pecan
sweet potatoes!
Desserts? Sticky bun
bread pudding. Addictive. (07/02)
