Review: Lucca, Boston
Lucca may be the ideal middle
ground - not too trendy, not too basic.
Not too boisterous, not too intimate. It
strikes just the right note for diners wanting
Northern Italian classics in casually
elegant and comfortable surrounds. From
an earthy potato and mushroom lasagna to
an excellent crispy chicken breast with
mashed potatoes and sautéed spinach
(and then, if you must know, a luscious
Torta della Nonna of creamy light goat cheese
and lemon cheesecake with fresh blueberries)
- we had an outstanding meal at this warm
and cozy North End spot.
We also sampled a roasted
duck, spinach and goat cheese tart, along
with an Italian Bistecca that made a
grown man nearly cry. Perfectly seared
tenderloin slick with a roasted shallot
demi-glaze and served with a heady truffled
cauliflower gratin.
An impressive collection of
Italian red and white wines makes up most
of the wine list, with a respectable offering
of American wines to round things out. Our
bottle of Luce 1998 Sangiovese Toscana Lucente
($48 at the restaurant, $28 suggested retail
price) was a solid accompaniment to our
soul-satisfying meal.
We'll definitely be back!
