Restaurant Review - Hot Wok, Houston TX

Just south of Houston, on the way to Clear Lake and Galveston, right off I-45, is Hot Wok. A casual, family-friendly, unassuming little spot. Chances are good that you’ll find owner Andy Tat there to greet you, and I imagine that regulars think they’ve found the best kept secret in town. For inside this strip center location, you can find some excellent Asian specialties. Drawing on his own background and cuisines from China, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Indonesia, Tat offers ultra fresh ingredients, flavorful sauces, and impressive variety.

Vietnamese Egg Rolls are fresh and delicate and served with killer peanut sauce flecked with plenty of red pepper flakes. The Vietnamese specialty soup Pho is an aromatic delight, with beef or chicken, cilantro, and paper thin rice noodles swimming in flavorful broth.

Entrée standouts include some of the best Thai Red Curry Chicken around – plenty spicy and not for the weak of heart. Hot Wok Shrimp was a big hit at the table, featuring perfectly fresh and succulent shrimp stir-fried with vegetables and a wonderfully garlicky sauce.

Expect to see a lot of names you know on this menu – General Tso’s Chicken, Mongolian Beef, Mu Shu Pork, Moo Goo Gai Pan. The difference at Hot Wok is the freshness. Nothing overcooked. No one all-purpose sauce like you’ll find at so many Chinese restaurants these days. And if you like, take advantage of the Stir-Fry Bar where you can choose your own ingredients (from bok choy to broccoli, and beef to calamari) and your own sauce and have it served up steaming hot and fresh to your personal specifications.

There’s a full bar and a nice, reasonably priced wine selection. Hot Wok is an undiscovered treasure – it’s worth the trip! (october 2001)
