Restaurant Review - the girl and the fig, Sonoma CA

Country French in appearance and sensibility, the girl and the fig richly deserves its reputation as one of the most charming spots in Sonoma. Fresh and healthy ingredients combine in Provencial rustic preparations to outstanding results. The signature Grilled Fig Salad is the perfect example (and quite possibly the best salad I have ever tasted). Arugula is tossed with grilled figs (in season), pecans, fresh goat cheese, and pancetta, with a fig and port vinaigrette. The way these ingredients complement each other but still maintain gloriously individual tastes is unforgettable.

The rest of the menu celebrates this kind of ingredient-combining equally as well. Another standout starter is the Grilled Sea Scallops with prosciutto, roasted corn confit, and truffle oil. And don’t miss the daily soup selections bursting with fresh from the garden ingredients.

Entrees include Pan-seared Halibut, served with flavorful ratatouille and mashed potatoes, and topped with saffron butter. The Duck Confit is warm and comforting with lentils and white beans. You’ll also find Steak & Frites, Rack of Lamb, and an excellent Grilled Pork Chop.

The wine list is mostly California Rhone Rangers, so look for lots of Syrah and Viognier. For more on the girl and the fig and its wines, check out our Sommelier Pick feature! (february 2001)
