Restaurant Review: Chamberlain's Steak and Chop House, Dallas

We immediately warmed to the traditional elegance of the room, with its gas lamp fixtures, deep woods, ivory linens and 1930s original lithographs.

The evening kicked off with the appetizer assortment, featuring a seafood sampling like shrimp remoulade and seared sea scallops. It was fine, if not exceptional, though we did object to the $10.95 per person charge, with a 2 person minimum. So much for sharing - which is probably the point, come to think of it. That, though, is our only price quibble at Chamberlain's. Otherwise the prices were down right reasonable!

We'd recommend the crab cake as a better starter alternative. Crispy edges give way to moist crab, not too much breading, and accompanied by a delectable cabbage slaw studded with pecans. A solid Caesar salad was also a winner, with its classic combo of Romaine, dressing and croutons. Generous portion, too!

Outstanding roast prime rib was tender and perfectly cooked, and served with housemade jus, garlicky mashed potatoes and a horseradish cream sauce. Absolutely delicious to the last bite (and we blush to admit that we did make it to the very last bite!).

A bone-in ribeye was also a home run, with its crispy charred exterior and rare to medium rare interior. Cooked exactly to order - and isn't that the better part of the challenge at any steakhouse?

Sides are a great deal, starting with the rich parmesan creamed spinach at just $3.95. We'll order it every time! Also enjoyed the fresh asparagus doused in a respectable Hollandaise.

The wine list has a rather lame French red section - disappointing since that's what we were in the mood for. Better to stick to the California Cabernet and Meritage sections, though to be honest, the list there is more generic and unimaginative than we had hoped. But we did spot the 2000 Whitehall Lane Napa Cabernet at a fairly reasonably restaurant price of $90. Good to the last drop! (october 2004)
