The
last time I visited Broussards was
during a summers evening thunderstorm.
The gas lamps hanging over the wrought
iron front entryway beckoned a flickering
warm glow. That evening I was seated in
the elegantly appointed main dining room,
and as I settled into my cushy chair,
I reflected on what it was about Broussards
that appealed to me so much. Certainly
the wonderful food and wine had something
to do with it, but it was more than that.
Ultimately, I decided it was the feeling
of a place that has been lovingly tended
to and cared for by a family for some
seventy-five years that comes through.
Dating from founder Joseph Broussard in
1920 to the Preuss family, owners for
the past thirty-five years, Broussards
exudes a warmth and comfort that is irresistible.
Chef/owner Gunter Preuss
elegant interpretations of classic Creole
cuisine include starters like Crabmeat
Ravigote (a flavorful creamy vinaigrette),
Corn Shrimp and Sweet Potato Bisque, and
my personal favorite, Trio of Louisiana
Oysters one each of Rockefeller,
Bienville and Broussards style.
Entrée standouts include the popular and
delicious Pompano Napoleon grilled
pompano, pepper-crusted scallops and shrimp,
with puff pastry and mustard caper sauce.
Plantation Petit Poulet Charlotte features
a delectable combination of perfectly
moist small whole chicken with an artichoke
stuffing, candied yams and currant demi-glace.
Ready for sheer decadence? How about the
Tournedo of Beef served on grilled portabello
mushrooms and sliced truffle-foie gras
mouse with a Bordeaux demi-glace.
Such an outstanding menu
deserves an equally impressive wine list,
and again Broussards never
disappoints. I could spend months happily
working my way through the twenty or so
pages of the list. From vintage Champagne
(including the wonderful 1995 Perrier
Jouet Fleur de Champagne at just $150)
to lovely and thoughtful selections of
California Cabernets and Chardonnays along
side wines from around the world, this
is a winning list to be sure. I especially
appreciated the wonderful array of Burgundy
reds and whites these wines beautifully
complement the upscale Creole cuisine.
The prices are eminently reasonable, making
ordering a special bottle of wine (or
two or three!) a real pleasure.
Broussards
offers three distinctive dining rooms,
along with a picture-perfect New Orleans
style courtyard. Evelyn Preuss, Gunters
wife and business partner, personally
ensures that all personal touches are
in place. From the lovely flowers blooming
in the courtyard to the impeccable linens
and candles at each table, Evelyn gives
Broussards those important extras
that sets it apart. Son Marc expertly
manages the daily operations and is a
constant and charming presence in the
dining rooms.
All in all, Broussards
is a charming and delicious experience.
I have a feeling Ill be back soon!
