Restaurant Review: Bob's Steak and Chop House, Dallas

Ask people about the best steak in Big D, and the response you get is a simple one: "Bob's." That's Bob's Steak and Chop House, with two area locations (plus one in San Francisco, oddly enough) and a devoted following in the steak-lovers set. The definite good old boys atmosphere is actually appealing in a Texas steakhouse, so what the heck. We settled in for a memorable meal.

The menu, like most steakhouses, offers up the usual suspects - shrimp cocktail, chopped salad, and an array of sides to go with your choice of beast. And, like most steakhouses, it's all about execution.

The evening began on an unexpected note - pickled cucumbers and sweet red peppers to go alongside delectable warm sourdough bread and butter. Love the attention to detail here, and the nibbles offered a match for cocktails.

Moving on to starters, we sampled the Shrimp Remoulade. Fresh and tasty, if not spectacular. Then an appealing variation on a chopped salad, featuring tomato, onion and fresh mozzarella - light but flavorful, and a perfect choice if you can steer yourself away from the decadent Bleu Cheese Salad, with its chopped hardboiled eggs and toasted pecans. Both were delish!

Two meats were up next. A New York Strip, ordered "black and blue" and gladly accommodated. A thin layer of seared and crunchy "black" quickly gave way to a perfectly "blue" interior. A modest pat of butter and a little added seasoning, and we were in steak heaven.

The other beast was a 14-oz. bone-in veal chop. Lovely to look at and completely satisfactory, though we liked the steak better. A side of addictive creamed corn and a couple of gigantic baked potatoes later, and we were utterly stuffed. Good thing we ordered a great bottle of artery cleansing Cabernet Sauvignon from the extensive list.

All in all, every bite at Bob's was delicious. A study in excess, perhaps, but delicious all the same. Clear some space on a credit card and enjoy - we did! (october 2004)
