Wine & Health: The Wine Sense Diet

"Too many Americans, when it comes to diet and health, look for the ‘quick fix.’ We wait at the edge of our seats for news of the next diet regimen that promises to be a panacea – the antidote to all that troubles us: weight gain, clogged arteries, depression, lethargy, and on and on. We expect diets like the Cabbage Soup diet or the Zone diet to do it all for us. We’ll deprive ourselves of food and rationalize. But then, we inevitably fall back into our old habits and the short-term benefits we initially saw, disappear.

"That’s why it’s important to adopt a natural, healthy lifestyle – like the Napa Valley lifestyle that incorporates wine in the diet – rather than some artificial regimen lifted out of a diet book. Unlike a quick fix diet, a lifestyle with wine can have long-term benefits not only for a healthy heart but also for weight maintenance, longevity, improved quality of life, fending off harmful effects of aging, and much more."

- From The Wine Sense Diet by Annette Shafer

The Wine Sense Diet

Could this be the end of the road for our little Wine & Health column? Could we have nothing left to say? No, wine’s health benefits are not in dispute, rather, a smart cookie by the name of Annette Shafer may have simply said it all in her new book, The Wine Sense Diet. How could we possibly expand upon the load of wine and health information found in this lovely and informative book? Shafer takes a look at the wine-health connection and the health benefits of "the Napa Valley lifestyle." The Wine Sense Diet shows how to combine wine with other healthy foods to easily create a diet that you can enjoy, offering recipes, wine recommendations, and personal philosophies from 25 of Napa Valley's leading family winemakers.

In short, Shafer proves that being healthy doesn’t have to be a eating 1.5 grapefruit slices before noon on Tuesdays and 2 soft boiled eggs for dinner (but only during a full moon). The Wine Sense Diet isn’t so much a diet as it is an encouraging, no-nonsense guide to living a healthier lifestyle. Shafer addresses the latest research on how drinking wine in moderation can prevent heart attacks, regulate weight, reduce the signs of aging, improve psychological outlook, lower the risk for kidney stones and stomach ulcers, reduce the risk of cancer, and more. Along with practical and philosophical encouragement, Shafer also offers tips on how to pick the perfect wine for any meal and flavor food according to your wine choices.

With a foreword by Robert Mondavi and participation from Napa Valley’s leading wineries, one might raise a skeptical brow and mutter, "of course, they would say wine is good for you." Nevertheless, even the most cynical among us can’t disagree with a diet philosophy that encourages moderation, honoring yourself, daily exercise, and listening to your body.
