As reported in the watershed
article "You
say tomato, I say tomato. You say potato,
I say no way! Too many carbs! I'm frying
bacon! Pass me the butter!",
the Wine Skinny crew volunteered to help
put together a panel to discuss food,
wine, and heart health for a wine
and art festival. And, as promised, here
is a recap from that panel discussion.
Panel speakers and registered
dieticians, (Nutrition
Sound Bites, Inc.) and (West Houston Medical Center),
both emphasized, beyond a shadow of a
doubt, the importance of moderation in
a heart healthy diet. Terrie provided
the audience with the following outline
for the heart-healthy "Mediterranean"
diet:
-
Light to moderate wine drinking
(one or two glasses a day)
-
Low in red meat
-
Low in lard or butter, higher in
olive oil
-
High in fish
-
High in cheese, low in whole milk
-
High in bread, fruits and vegetables
On the heels of some frightening
heart disease statistics from our knowledgeable
panelists (heart disease is the #1 killer
in America), we all sat up and paid attention.
A few of us began scribbling grocery lists.
The panelists advised that,
as a general rule, "one or two glasses
a day" means 1 glass for women and
2 glasses for men. And, as to how much
is in a glass of wine? The answer is 5
ounces. Hey, kids, I don't make the rules.
I just report them.
I can't say enough about
our panelists, Terrie MacLaren and Carolynn
Colins. They were both friendly, informed,
and entertaining. To learn more about
healthy eating, Terrie and her company
Nutrition
Sound Bites, Inc. maintain an
exceptional website where you can find
loads of info.
