Wine & Health, oct/nov 2004
This should come as no surprise to any
gal who has ever turned to a glass of wine
to help get the creative juices flowing
at the computer (why is everyone looking
at me?). The results of a study at University
College London suggests that drinking
half a bottle of wine a day can make the
female mind work better!
If that news gives anyone a bit of an excited
giggle (again, why is everyone looking at
me??), consider this: the study was conducted
on 10,000 British civil servants. There's
a joke in there somewhere
Anyway,
the study seems to show that drinking wine
increases verbal and mathematical skills
as well as short-term memory. If one glass
per week was good - and it was, better than
the non-drinkers, then one-half bottle of
wine per day was even better.
Once again, the health benefits seem to
stem from reducing the risk of cardiovascular
disease, thereby increasing blood flow to
the brain.
Once again, again, the researchers cautioned
against overdoing it and also pointed out
that the possible drawback related to alcohol
(increased risks of cancer, etc.) might
actually outweigh the benefits in some individuals.
Draw your own conclusions, boys and girls
- we're off to pop open a bottle of red
and get to work!
