Flavonoids: Hip-Hop artist or health benefit?

Question: What exactly are flavonoids? (Hint: they have nothing to do with hip-hop.)

Answer: Flavonoids are plant compounds. Oh.

More helpfully, flavonoids are found in a variety of fruits and vegetables, and they are believed to have a variety of health-boosting effects, including lowering risks of heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, and a wide range of other diseases. Common sense would tell you that if these little doodads are found in fruits and vegetables, then surely they’re present in products that come from fruits and vegetables – like wine. And sure enough, a recent study seems to suggest that’s true.

Researchers from Finland’s National Public Health Institute recently published a report in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (http://www.ajcn.org/) directly correlating a higher consumption of flavonoids with lower overall mortality rates as well as death rates from a variety of diseases.

Apples seem to be the most effective. Apple wine, anyone?
