Past Issues:
Easy To Find, One Figure Wine,
oct/nov 1999
This issue I'm devoting ETFOFW
to a brand of wines -- .
Actually, I'm devoting it to the red wines
of Talus. I can't speak for their whites,
because I find it entirely too hard to pass
up the widely available Estancia Pinnacles
Chardonnay at around $9.99 (ssssafe!) or
the Hogue Fumè Blanc for around $8.
But,
if you're looking for an easy to find red
wine that's more than right for the price,
then check out the Talus reds: Cabernet
Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Merlot, and Pinot
Noir. Talus has done an impressive job of
creating inexpensive wines that not only
taste good, but are also visually pleasing
from color and clarity to the striking label
art. My particular favorite is the smooth,
well-balanced Pinot Noir which has won wine
industry accolades. All of the wines come
in at well under $10. In fact, I can generally
find all of the reds at my local market
for less than $8 each. Let the Cabernet
breathe a bit in your wine glass before
drinking and you won't be disappointed.
These are the kinds of wines to keep in
mind for Thanksgiving. They won't break
the bank or your family's taste buds.
Recently, I saw a message
posted on a message board on the web. The
guy was raving about the Talus Pinot Noir
he had enjoyed at a restaurant while on
vacation in San Francisco. However, he was
concerned about availability of the wine
outside of California. The posted response
to his message read something like this:
"Well, I live in Kentucky and we have
Talus on the shelves here. And if we can
get it in Kentucky . . ." Perhaps that
should be our "easy to find" standard
-- if you can get it in Kentucky . . .
Talus wines are from California.
Introduced in late 1995, Talus is an affiliated
label of Sebastiani Sonoma Cask Cellars.
Melissa Bates has been the Talus winemaker
since its introduction. The striking label
art was created by Stephen Black.
