Past Issues: ETFOFW (Easy to Find One Figure Wines), june/july 2002 - Calatrasi

Sicily is Italy’s largest region, almost 10,000 square miles, with a population of over 5 million people, and producing over one billion liters of wine annually.

Calatrasi is one of Sicily’s most important wineries, offering a range of wines, including easy drinking wines at "best buy" prices. One of Calatrasi’s labels, Terrale, is featured here. The name Terrale was expressly created to point out the connection between the wines and the earth. Under the Terrale label the ancient tradition meets innovation and old native vines start a new international life. Australia native Brian Fletcher recently stepped-in as winemaker and has beautifully followed in the footsteps of UC Davis grad and former-winemaker Mark Shannon. Fletcher continues to make these wines fruity and bright -- perfect for everyday drinking and wonderfully suited to a wide range of foods.

2000 Primitivo Puglia Terrale ($7). We’ve been drinking this wine for a few years now and like it every year! Robust and fruity, featuring red cherry and raspberry fruit, with a subtle, appealing spicy note, this wine is smooth and easy to drink. Ready to drink now.

2000 Catarratto Sicilia Terrale ($7). And now for something completely different… This soft, young white wine is uniquely Sicilian and well worth sampling. White stone fruit, wildflower honey, and mineral notes combine in this fresh, fruity wine. Slightly green in color and character. Ready to drink now.
