Bargain Reds for Holiday Parties

In this regular feature, we spotlight those wines that offer great bang for the buck -- $15 and under, to be exact. Here you'll find our everyday wines, house pours, and occasionally a great new find. Have a favorite Bargain Wine? Tell us about it at editor@wineskinny.com

When you're trying to entertain a crowd, you want tasty but affordable wines that can see you into the wee hours. Here are a few Bargain reds we've tasted lately that can go the distance:

Barton & Guestier Bistro Wine 2005 Pinot Noir Vin de Pays d'Oc ($9). What a nice surprise this one was! A tasty little number -- that actually tastes like a Pinot. With pretty, lithe red berry laced with mineral, clove and toast. Ready to drink now. Locate this wine online or in your area.

Big House Wine 2005 Red California ($10). Juicy red fruit -- strawberry, cherry, raspberry -- is the star here, with light accents of baking spices and sweet vanilla. A fun, easy to slurp wine. Ready to drink now. Locate this wine online or in your area.

Bodegas Escorihuela 2006 Malbec Mendoza Don Miguel Gascon ($12). Silky blackberry and blueberry flavors are accented with spicy oak, cocoa and a touch of vanilla. Ready to drink now and over the next year or two. Locate this wine online or in your area.

Castello di Gabbiano 2005 Chianti ($10). Fairly light, but easily drinkable. A good pizza wine! Offers dried red fruit, cranberry and mineral. Ready to drink now. Locate this wine online or in your area.

Castello di Gabbiano 2004 Chianti Classico ($13). Medium-bodied, with more character than the Chianti (above). Black currant and berry flavors are laced with pepper and spicy oak. Ready to drink now. A nice everyday red that works with a variety of foods. Locate this wine online or in your area.

Cellar No. 8 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon California ($10). Spicy bittersweet chocolate aromas and flavors accent ripe red cherry, plum and clove flavors that linger on the full finish. A lot of wine for the money. Ready to drink now. Locate this wine online or in your area.

Cellar No. 8 2005 Merlot California ($10). Tangy red berry and cherry flavors are laced with touches of vanilla, coffee bean and toasty oak. Finishes dry. Ready to drink now. Locate this wine online or in your area.

Cellar No. 8 2005 Zinfandel California ($10). Yummy and at a great price. Slurpable red fruit, a kick of black pepper, and a spicy, toasty finish. Ready to drink now. Locate this wine online or in your area.

Grant Burge 2005 Shiraz Barossa Vines ($15). Quite nice -- very good Shiraz at this price point, with loads of flavor and personality -- a good cheese party wine. Black cherry, baking spices and a kick of pepper some together on a ripe, lipsmacking finish. Ready to drink now and over the next couple of years. Locate this wine online or in your area.

Martin Codax 2005 Tempranillo Rioja Ergo ($15). On the light side, which is particularly appealing in summer, with pretty red cherry and raspberry fruit laced with mineral, vanilla bean and toast notes that linger on the moderate finish. We like to pop it in the fridge for about 20 minutes before opening, just to chill it lightly, and then serve it with anything from grilled burgers to barbecue to Cajun-inspired dishes. Ready to drink now. (Weekend Wine 06/07) Locate this wine online or in your area.

(oops) 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Valle Central ($12). A little funky earth on the nose, but then ripe bing cherry and chocolate flavors dominate, with a bit of spicy vanilla on the finish. Ready to drink now. Locate this wine online or in your area.

Symington Family Estates 2005 Douro Vale do Bomfim Reserva ($12). This is just delicious -- quite possibly the best wine in this article. With focused red cherry, berry and blueberry flavors that are laced with toasty vanilla and nut notes and a dusting of mocha that fold together on a lush finish. Ready to drink now and over the next two or three years. Excellent wine at this price! Locate this wine online or in your area.

This now-fabulously-named column used to be called Easy To Find One Figure Wines, for reasons that we cannot currently remember but were surely enthusiastic about at the time. Anyhoo, check out our Past Issue Index for more great value-priced wine selections!
