Past Issues: Bargain Wine, aug/sep 2005 - BBQ Wine

In this regular feature, we spotlight those wines that offer great bang for the buck -- under $15 bucks, to be exact. Here you'll find our everyday wines, house pours, and occasionally a great new find. Have a favorite Bargain Wine? Tell us about it at editor@wineskinny.com

Nothing says summer like BBQ. From Texas to Memphis to Kansas City and beyond, barbecue takes on a wide range of styles and flavors. And while it's true that an ice-cold beer can be just the ticket, the right wine has its place, too.

This is not the time to break out your finest bottles - what you want here are the super fruity reds that have the exuberant ripeness to stand up to the smoky, hearty flavors in barbecue and barbecue sauces. Zinfandel is a great choice, as is California and Australian Shiraz. This is no time for wimpy, light wines - take advantage of the plethora of New World fruit bombs on the shelves these days. They're just crying out for some good 'cue!

Here are a few under-$15 choices that went particularly well with a big plate of smoky Texas ribs and just a little bit of spicy sauce:

Jacob's Creek 2003 Shiraz-Cabernet South Eastern Australia ($8). Easy-drinking stuff, with sweet, ripe red cherry and berry, vanilla and toasty oak. Finishes with all juicy fruit. Ready to drink now. Locate this wine online or in your area!
