Past Issues: Bargain Wine, mar/apr 2003 --
Jacob's Creek

In this regular feature, we spotlight those wines that offer great bang for the buck -- under $15 bucks, to be exact. Here you'll find our everyday wines, house pours, and occasionally a great new find. Have a favorite Bargain Wine? Tell us about it at editor@wineskinny.com

Jacob’s Creek has become one of Australia’s largest wineries, with annual wine production topping two million cases. Chief Winemaker Philip Laffer has been one of the leaders of the Australian wine boom and continues to be an enthusiastic student of the industry. His philosophy on winemaking is simple, "I believe that you maintain quality from continuous learning and from understanding past experiences."

Jacob’s Creek offers several lines, including a Limited Release series, a Reserve line, and the value-priced "Table Wine" line that we focus on here. We recently tasted several of these table wines and think they offer great bang for the buck!

2002 Semillon Chardonnay South Eastern Australia ($9). Fresh bouquet leads to clean, crisp pear and green apple fruit, with melon and sweet pea. Picks up a splash of lime on the tasty finish. Ready to drink now.

Try Fleur de Maquis (also known as Brin d’Amour), a fresh sheep’s milk cheese that is sprinkled with rosemary, coriander, savory and juniper berries. (France)

2002 Chardonnay South Eastern Australia ($9). Baked apple and toasty oak on the bouquet. Sweet, juicy apple and pineapple fruit flavors, with simple vanillin oak notes. Ready to drink now.

2001 Merlot South Eastern Australia ($10). Sweet red fruit and a light spiciness on the bouquet, with medium-bodied red plum and blackberry flavors and light spice, herbal, and vanilla oak notes. Ready to drink now.

Smoked Gouda

2001 Cabernet Sauvignon South Eastern Australia ($10). Smooth, supple, easy-drinking, with ripe cherry and plum fruit with smoky oak, rosemary and vanilla accents that linger on the finish. Quite tasty.

We loved it with a sort of a "blue brie" -- Westfield Farm’s Hubbardston Blue!

2000 Shiraz South Eastern Australia ($10). Not crazy about this one – it had a cherry cough-medicine flavor that overwhelmed everything else.

Also in this line at similar value prices are a Shiraz Cabernet and a Grenache Shiraz.

This now-fabulously-named column used to be called Easy To Find One Figure Wines, for reasons that we cannot currently remember but were surely enthusiastic about at the time. Anyhoo, check out our Past Issue Index for more great value-priced wine selections!
