Past Issues: Bargain Wines, dec02/jan03

In this regular feature, we spotlight those wines that offer great bang for the buck -- under $15 bucks, to be exact. Here you'll find our everyday wines, house pours, and occasionally a great new find. Have a favorite Bargain Wine? Tell us about it at editor@wineskinny.com

As we were putting together this issue, with all the holiday wines and foods, we decided to offer a little relief here. Because let's face it, sometimes the richness and decadence of holiday feasting becomes overwhelming. In those moments (admittedly few and far between), a crisp refreshing Sauvignon Blanc can be just the thing. It’s a great choice for sipping at cocktail parties and open houses, since it won’t clash with most foods and offers a welcome contrast to indulgent holiday fare.

We’ve come across several Sauvignon Blanc bargain buys lately. Here are a few of our favorites:

Guenoc 2001 Sauvignon Blanc Lake County ($14). Juicy apple and lime fruit with a generous grassy note. Stays crisp and racy through to the finish. Ready to drink now.

Lockwood 2000 Sauvignon Blanc Monterey ($11). Bright, juicy citrus and tropical fruit notes marry with appealing toasty oak and subtle herbal notes. Ready to drink now.

Markham 2001 Sauvignon Blanc Napa Valley ($10). Racy tropical fruit, juicy grapefruit, tart lemon rind, and grassy notes add up to a very enjoyable wine and a darn good value.

Michael Lynch 2001 Sauvignon Blanc Bordeaux ($9). Heck of a deal on this refreshing French white. Juicy apple and passion fruit flavors are deftly balanced with herb and fig notes. Delicious finish. Ready to drink now.

Murphy-Goode 2001 Fume Blanc Sonoma County ($13). Juicy tropical fruit on a medium-bodied frame. Includes crisp citrus and honeyed fig notes on the finish. Ready to drink now.

Nobilo 2001 Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough Fall Harvest ($11). Shows nice complexity, including delicate floral and herbal accents to the juicy apple and tart quince fruit flavors. Stays clean and focused through to the finish. Good value on this quality New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Ready to drink now.

Raymond 2000 Sauvignon Blanc Napa Valley Reserve ($11). Juicy apple and creamy lemon curd are accented with toasty oak and just a touch of pineapple on the finish. Ready to drink now.

Santa Rita 2001 Sauvignon Blanc Maule Valley Reserva ($11). Straightforward citrus and grassy elements are balanced on a medium-bodied frame in this Chilean Sauvignon Blanc. Finishes clean and juicy. Ready to drink now.

Sterling 2001 Sauvignon Blanc North Coast ($12). Floral aromas introduce a refreshing mix of stone fruit and melon, with focused herbal, grassy and citrus accents in this elegant wine. Ready to drink now.

Turning Leaf 2001 Sauvignon Blanc California ($7). Features concentrated tropical fruit, picking up citrus on the clean, refreshing finish. Light and easy to drink. Ready to drink now.

This now-fabulously-named column used to be called Easy To Find One Figure Wines, for reasons that we cannot currently remember but were surely enthusiastic about at the time. Anyhoo, check out our Past Issue Index for more great value-priced wine selections!
