Winery Spotlight: Saintsbury

I recently sat down with Saintsbury co-founder David Graves. During the course of lunch, we touched on topics ranging from plate tectonics to the sale of Anchor Brewing and the future of wine blogs. In between, we tasted through a handful of wines. Here are notes on my favorites:
Saintsbury 2009 Vin Gris of Pinot Noir Carneros “Vincent Vin Gris” ($15). Crisp, fresh strawberry and red cherry fruit, with a touch of cream mid-palate, then finishes dry and with mouthwatering acidity. Easy to like. Ready to drink now. Locate this wine online or in your area.
Saintsbury 2008 Pinot Noir Carneros Garnet ($20). Dark berry and cherry aromas and flavors are laced with loam and mineral notes — and interesting play between ripe and earthy. Ready to drink now and over the next 3-4 years. Locate this wine online or in your area. (2009-11-01)
Saintsbury 2007 Pinot Noir Carneros ($35). I like the balance here — food friendly, supple, pretty cherry character, with a fresh finish and deep nutmeg and clove accents. Ready to drink now and over the next 4-5 years. Locate this wine online or in your area. (2009-11-01)
Saintsbury 2007 Pinot Noir Carneros Lee Vineyard ($45). Spicy, forward fruit aromas introduce rich blueberry and black cherry flavors laced with touches of chocolate, sweet tobacco and fresh herbs. Manages to find that important balance of offering lush richness without being heavy. Delicious. Ready to drink now and over the next 5-6 years. Locate this wine online or in your area.
