Pairing Wine with Valentine Chocolates… Why Not?
I love Valentine’s Day — relationship or no, I just like the silly, pointless sweetness of it all. And of course, there’s the chocolate. Some years I’m drawn to the latest, coolest, pushing-the-flavor boundaries brands, some years I’m old school. (This year, that plush, cushiony red Godiva heart box has my eye…)
But whatever the chocolate choice, I still want a glass of wine to go with. Here are a couple of sweet ideas that hit just the right note for all that chocolatey goodness…
Port works — a ruby or LBV is what I gravitate to — save the Tawny, and certainly the Vintage Ports, for cheese courses and/or more complex desserts.
Graham’s NV Port Six Grapes Reserve ($22). Thick and grapey, ruby-ish, with deep black cherry, raisin, Christmas cake, spice and chocolate notes that mingle on the full, sweet finish. Ready to drink now. Locate this wine online or in your area.
Dow’s 2004 Late Bottled Port ($22). A lot of finesse at this price point, offering full-flavored fruit preserve flavors — blackberry, boysenberry, dark plum, black cherry — accented with toasted vanilla and light spices, with a mouthwatering finish. Ready to drink now and over the next couple of years. Locate this wine online or in your area.
Or you could go a completely different direction and choose a sweet sparkling wine. This is a good time to pop the cork on one of those “off-dry” Aussie sparkling Shiraz concoctions. Or, speaking of Australia, Innocent Bystander’s Pink Moscato would totally work here. Myself, I lean toward something Italian (what a shocker), like Cinzano’s Asti. Or better yet, this other Cinzano bubbly — this time deeply, romantically pink:
Cinzano NV Brachetto d’Acqui ($15). Light ruby red in color, soft, sweet, juicy, lightly creamy — imagine perfectly ripe strawberries and raspberries touched with cream, and you’re pretty close. Low in alcohol (just 6.5% abv) it’s silly and romantic — perfect for Valentine’s Day, and delicious with chocolates. Ready to drink now. Locate this wine online or in your area.

Indeed port goes with chocolate. Seppeltsfield did a tasting/pairing of some of our Australian fortifieds with Valrhona, the great French chocolatiers from Hermitage with very interesting results!
