Random Rave: Monte Volpe 2005 Sangiovese
One of my favorite things about traveling to wine regions are those random wine treasures — wines I would have never had the opportunity to taste if I hadn’t happened to pull into that particular parking lot to check my driving directions, noticed there was a tasting room tucked in the corner of the building, and wandered on in. This is one of those wines:
Monte Volpe 2005 Sangiovese Mendocino ($17). Silky, bright and delicious — and well-priced! Offering medium-bodied red berry and cherry fruit laced with roasted herb, vanilla, spice and smoke notes, with a long, pretty finish. Ready to drink now and over the next couple of years. Locate this wine online or in your area.
