Bubbly for the Holiday Season
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it here again — people who save bubbly for the holidays are amateurs. Sparkling wine is great all year round — food friendly, happy, delicious, refreshing stuff. But since I do tend to want extrabubbles this time of year, I hereby submit to the cries for a holiday bubbly round-up! And since the cries also demanded affordable pricetags, here are some well-priced winners:
Lucien Albrecht NV Brut Rose Cremant d’Alsace ($23). Easy to like for its fresh red berry character and touches of cream, hazelnut and apricot skin on the finish. Full-bodied enough to stand up to substantial food pairings. Ready to drink now. Locate this wine online or in your area.
Domaine Chandon NV Rose California ($22). Such a happy pink bubbly, offering pretty red berry and cherry fruit laced with nutmeg, pie crust and toasty vanilla accents that linger on the finish. Ready to drink now. Locate this wine online or in your area.
Gloria Ferrer NV Blanc de Noirs Sonoma County ($20). Easy to love for its racy, juicy red berry aromas and flavors that pick up vanilla, buttered toast and light spice notes through the fresh finish. Ready to drink now and over the next couple of years. Locate this wine online or in your area.
Zonin NV Prosecco Brut ($15). Easy to like, with a touch of sweetness but not overly so, featuring fresh peach and pear flavors and a clean finish. Ready to drink now. Locate this wine online or in your area.
Paul Cheneau NV Cava Brut Lady of Spain ($14). Liked! Nice complexity and crispness, especially at this price point. Lush melon notes are laced with spice and citrus, with a slightly tropical feel. Medium-bodied and versatile with food — especially pre-dinner nibbles. Ready to drink now. Locate this wine online or in your area.
Cinzano NV Asti ($12). Soft and frankly sweet, with luscious melon and juicy peach flavors. Try with gorgonzola drizzled with honey for a simple dessert. Ready to drink now. Locate this wine online or in your area.
Domaine Ste. Michelle NV Brut Columbia Valley ($12). This one is becoming a reliable go-to, inexpensive bubble — appealing for its light and juicy apple and citrus flavors, dashes of spice and toast, and easy-going finish. Ready to drink now. Locate this wine online or in your area.
Marques de Monistrol NV Cava Brut MPX ($12). Easy drinking quaff, but with pleasant red apple and pear flavors and dashes of toast and citrus. Ready to drink now. Locate this wine online or in your area.
