alamos-torrontesIt’s been a day of recipe testing, including a reluctant trip to the grocery on the Sunday before Thanksgiving (yes, it was a madhouse) to buy “corrective ingredients” to turn a mess into a better recipe. In the process, I’ve used and then had to clean, nearly every pan and bowl I own…

All of the above has reminded me of the importance of a light white wine for sipping as one toils away in the kitchen. Something refreshing and rejuvenating. Something that makes the cook want to keep going, rather than chucking it all in the trash bin and ordering pizza.

Do yourself a favor as you prep for Thanksgiving — pop a crisp white in the fridge ahead of time. (Better yet, give a chilled bottle to whoever it is in your life that’s doing most of the heavy lifting for your turkey feast!) Here are a few affordable possibilities:

Alamos 2008 Torrontes Salta ($13). Here’s an affordable white from Argentina that’s a nice surprise — intensely aromatic (floral and fresh, grapey notes) introduce medium-bodied, refreshing, orchard fruit flavors, light herbal accents, and juicy acidity on the finish. Ready to drink now. Locate this wine online or in your area.

Alma Rosa 2008 Pinot Gris Sta. Rita Hills La Encantada Vineyard ($18). Juicy apricot and crisp nectarine and apple combine on a pretty, silky wine. With bright acidity on the smooth finish. Good value, too! Enjoyed with a simply grilled swordfish steak with one of those mango salsas with just a little bit of spicy heat. Ready to drink now and over the next couple of years. Locate this wine online or in your area. (2009-11-11)

Big House 2008 White California ($10). Great deal here, for its mouthwateringly fresh, floral-laced blend of smooth melon, tangerine and dried apricot flavors that linger on the pretty finish. Ready to drink now. A blend of Malvasia Bianca, Muscat Canelli, Viognier and Rousanne. Locate this wine online or in your area. (2009-10-18)

Taltarni 2008 Sauvignon Blanc Victoria-Tasmania ($13). A good wine at a good price, with juicy pineapple, passion fruit and tangerine leading the way to a mouthwatering finish. Clean and appealing, and ready to drink now. Locate this wine online or in your area. (2009-10-28)

Tiefenbrunner 2008 Pinot Bianco Alto Adige ($15). Floral and mineral aromas and flavors accent medium-bodied apple and melon, with a smooth, elegant finish. Ready to drink now and over the next couple of years. Locate this wine online or in your area. (2009-11-07)
