Terredora: Campania Wine Today

It’s been an embarrassment of Italian riches around here lately — with loads of tasty wines and charming Italian men to present them. (In other words, all is right with the world.)
I recently met up with winemaker Lucio Mastroberardino of Campania winery Terredora di Paolo. Over lunch and wines, I learned more about this reemerging region that was once the toast of the ancient world wine scene. (I quite like the idea that there was an ancient world wine scene…)
Located in southwest Italy around its capital of Naples, Campania’s native grape varieties include Aglianico (for reds) and Fiano and Greco (for whites), among others.
Terredora is Campania’s largest producer and is a leader in terms of matching vineyard sites to their best-suited varities. Along the way, they’re making some very good wines:
Terredora di Paolo 2008 Falanghina Irpinia ($19). Fresh and aromatic, with pear, white peach and mineral notes that stay clean and pretty on a medium-bodied frame. Ready to drink now. Locate this wine online or in your area.
Terredora di Paolo 2008 Fiano di Avellino Terre di Dora ($28). Intensely perfumed, with floral notes accenting lovely pear, citrus and distinctive mineral flavors. Full-bodied, with a long, evolving, elegant finish. Ready to drink now and over the next couple of years. Locate this wine online or in your area.
Terredora di Paolo 2008 Greco di Tufo Loggia della Serra ($23). I love Greco… Silky smooth, full-bodied, with smooth peach, apricot and tangerine/citrus aromas and flavors that linger on an elegant, lightly spicy, mineral-laced finish. Ready to drink now and over the next couple of years. Locate this wine online or in your area.
Terredora di Paolo 2007 Aglianico Campania ($18). Medium-bodied black fruits — cherry, plum, berries — are accented with aromatic, smoky oak, chocolate and light floral notes. Moderate, focused finish with chalky tannins. Ready to drink now and over the next two or three years. Locate this wine online or in your area.
Terredora di Paolo 2006 Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio Rosso ($24). Medium-bodied and easy-drinking, with pretty red fruit character — cherry, currant, raspberry — that is fresh and balanced, with spice, chocolate and mineral accents on the moderate finish. Focused and food-friendly. Ready to drink now and over the next couple of years. 100% Piedirosso. Locate this wine online or in your area.
Terredora di Paolo 2003 Taurasi ($55). Deeply aromatic, with smoke, earth and floral accents to the intense black cherry and plum fruit, with a long, elegant, complex finish supported by generous, chalky tannins. Ready to drink now and over the next three or four years. Locate this wine online or in your area.
