Travel: Chic Retreats
The most adorable little book arrived in the mail recently — the 2009/2010 Chic Retreats Book. It’s full of tempting details on small boutique hotels around the world, and it’s quickly become a personal favorite.
Apparently all the hotels here are represented by the Britain-based publisher, but I would say that this book is more than just a pretty advertisement. There’s lots of good stuff here!
For example, without it I would never have known about Le Couvent d’Herepian in France’s Languedoc. This 17-th century convent has been restored and converted into a b&b/spa, with 13 suites and gardens full of aromatic chamomile, lavender and roses. A relaxation pool, regional French cuisine and wines complete the picture and have this spot at the top of my Languedoc wish list.
And I really wish I’d known about La Maison Bord’Eaux when I visited Bordeaux last year. It looks smart, hip and exclusive — and affordable — with a wine bar, Italian linens, internet access, and breakfasts in the garden.
It’s not all France — the book covers the world, with Europe leading the way, but also properties from Morocco to Bali, Argentina, Dubai, Figi and Florida.
All in all, there are 400 carefully selected boutique hotels (all have less than 30 rooms) included in the Chic Retreats book, which is categorized into Country Chic, City Chic, Beach Chic, Family Chic and the like.
To get the book, you need to join Chic Retreats at their website: www.chicretreats.com. But the site itself seems to be free to a great extent (if frustratingly slow at times), and much of the hotel info is included there as well. Other benefits of membership include room rate discounts and preferred rates at Globalista, another travel publication and resource.
