Varietal Tasting: Riesling for the Patio!

wallflowerI recently tasted a range of $15-ish Rieslings that would be perfect for summer patio sipping — crisp, refreshing, some fruitier than others, but all easy to drink. Here are the best of the lot:

Ad Lib 2008 Riesling Mt. Barker Wall Flower ($17). Light petrol/flint aromas introduce this somewhat restrained Aussie style, with citrus, some floral, crisp white peach and plenty of stony mineral notes. Complex, integrated finish. This is a lot of wine for the price! Ready to drink now and over the next couple of years. Locate this wine online or in your area.

Blue Fish 2008 Riesling Pfalz ($11). Juicy lime and lemon accents on a peachy frame, with a racy, crisp finish. Ready to drink now and over the next couple of years. Locate this wine online or in your area.

Chateau St. Jean 2008 Riesling Sonoma County ($15). A ripe, soft style, with juicy apple and peach aromas and flavors that finish with a touch of marzipan. Ready to drink now. Locate this wine online or in your area.

d’Arenberg 2008 Riesling McLaren Vale The Stump Jump ($11). More stony and crisp than fruity, but still offers some clean lemon zest and lime notes, with a mouthwatering finish. Ready to drink now. Locate this wine online or in your area.

Pacific Rim 2008 Riesling Columbia Valley ($14). Pretty orange blossom and jasmine aromas introduce off-dry pear and juicy citrus flavors that linger nicely on the mouthwatering finish. Ready to drink now. (2009-07-14) Locate this wine online or in your area.

S.A. Prum 2008 Riesling Mosel-Saar-Ruwer Essence ($13). Flinty aromas and flavors that linger through to the finish and accent pretty tangerine and apricot flavors, with a long, complex, racy finish. Should age nicely, even at this price point. Ready to drink now and over the next four or five years. Locate this wine online or in your area.

St. Hallett 2008 Riesling Eden Valley ($16). Aromatic and citrusy, with an array of lemon, lime, tangerine and tropical citrus flavors that stay tart and racy through the mineral-laced finish. Very nice. Ready to drink now and over the next three or four years. Locate this wine online or in your area.
