Here are the favorites from a recent $25-ish Pinot Noir tasting — they’re all 2007s and should be hitting the shelves right about now!
Chateau St. Jean 2007 Pinot Noir Sonoma County ($20). Nice! With pretty black cherry and raspberry fruit, aromatic floral and smoke notes, lightly toasty oak, and a long, creamy finish. Ready to drink now. Locate this wine online or in your area.
Cambria 2007 Pinot Noir Santa Maria Valley Julia’s Vineyard ($21). Deep, smooth black fruit character — blackberry, plum — is laced with aromatic earth and spice notes that linger on the full-bodied finish. Nice concentration at this price point. Ready to drink now and over the next two or three years. Locate this wine online or in your area.
La Crema 2007 Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast ($25). This one started out quite light at first, but after a few hours opened up to include some delicately lush red cherry and berry character, along with accents of spiced tea and mineral. Moderate length. Ready to drink now (recommend a bit of breathing time!) and over the next three or four years. Locate this wine online or in your area.
Wild Horse 2007 Pinot Noir Central Coast ($25). Bright, tangy red fruit — raspberry, strawberry, cherry, plum — leads the way here, with touches of toast, clove and creamy vanilla that linger on the finish. Ready to drink now and over the next couple of years. Locate this wine online or in your area.
The Four Graces 2007 Pinot Noir Willamette Valley ($29). Appealing for its complexity and structure, with integrated red cherry and blackberry fruit, light mushroom and mineral notes, and a long, plummy finish. Delicious now and should age nicely for another four or five years, at least. Locate this wine online or in your area.
Pair any one of them with a supper of wild mushroom risotto served alongside a crisp green salad, crusty baguettes and an array of goat cheeses.
