hylandAustralia’s Penfolds winery makes a huge lineup of wines, up to and most famously the fabulously-priced Grange. At the other end of the spectrum come some everyday wines that are all together more affordable and still offer admirable quality for the price.

Named after the founder’s son-in-law, who steered the winery to a prominent position in the early 1900s, the Thomas Hyland wines are a good example of how a really big winery, with fruit from here, there and everywhere, can put those enormous resources to good use and make inexpensive, solid quality wines!

Penfolds 2008 Riesling Adelaide Thomas Hyland ($14). Not a particularly distinctive example of Australian Riesling, but still appealing for its light floral and crisp citrus aromas and flavors, with moderate palate weight and a slightly toasty finish. Ready to drink now. Locate this wine online or in your area.

Penfolds 2006 Shiraz Adelaide Thomas Hyland ($15). Nice depth at this price point, with deep, dark, aromatic plum and dried black cherry character, and generous baking spice and creamy vanilla accents on the slightly earthy finish. Ready to drink now and over the next couple of years. Locate this wine online or in your area.

Penfolds 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon South Australia Thomas Hyland ($15). Black currant and berry aromas and flavors are actually rather tightly wound for a $15 wine, with espresso and dusty bittersweet chocolate notes wound up with firm tannins on the finish. Opened up in the glass after a bit. Ready to drink now, though could benefit from decanting, and over the next 2-4 years. Locate this wine online or in your area.
