Rave: Rainy Day Reds
What is it about a rainy day that makes me want to reach for a rich, smooth red wine… Here are four I’ve tasted (so far) today — wonder which one I’ll finish off with dinner?
Rutini 2006 Malbec Mendoza ($19). Smooth, aromatic blackberry jam flavors pick up appealing anise and smoky black pepper notes through the lush finish. Easy to like and pair with food. Ready to drink now. Locate this wine online or in your area.
Calera 2007 Pinot Noir Central Coast ($24). Aromatic black cherry and currant fruit stays focused through the pretty finish, picking up mineral, licorice and lavender along the way. Very nice. Ready to drink now and over the next four or five years. Locate this wine online or in your area.
Two Hands 2007 Shiraz Barossa Valley Gnarly Dudes ($38). No foolin’ around, this is a big, rich wine. But it’s also balanced, with alcohol and oak levels that are in-line with the ripe fruit. Dark, intense blackberry and plum aromas and flavors are accented with loads of baking spices, bittersweet chocolate and smoke notes. Ready to drink now and over the next three or four years. Locate this wine online or in your area.
Mazzocco 2006 Zinfandel Dry Creek Valley Pony Reserve ($50). Slick blackberry and black currant jam character, with accents of rich chocolate, sweet tobacco and brown spices. A big, rich wine with a long finish. Ready to drink now and over the next year or two. Locate this wine online or in your area.

I have enjoyed buying older cabs and when we are ready to drink one, I have found if you decanter the wine for about one hour they really open up and are just great–rt
