Pairing: BBQ & Zin

This is the time of year that I start scouting around for a new crop of Zinfandels to pair with barbecue. For me, the ripe, pepper-laced red berry flavors of the Zin pair wonderfully with all kind of ‘cue — from saucy ribs to smoky brisket and all BBQ goodness in between. Here are a few I’ve enjoyed lately:
Frank Family 2006 Zinfandel Napa Valley ($36). So appealing, with vibrant red berry and cherry fruit laced with black pepper, smoke, savory dried herbs and toasty vanilla that fold together on a long, rich finish. Ready to drink now and over the next four or five years. Locate this wine online or in your area. (2009-03-01)
Wilson 2006 Zinfandel Dry Creek Valley Tori Vineyard ($32). Packs a wallop, with cassis and black cherry aromas and flavors laced with briary herbs and warm spices. Long, full-bodied, chewy finish. Ready to drink now and over the next couple of years. Locate this wine online or in your area.
Simi 2006 Zinfandel Sonoma County ($20). This one was my favorites… mostly because it offers a lovely, refreshing balance that many Zins lack. Nothing heavy handed or overly alcoholic here, just bright red berry and cherry aromas and flavors that stay focused through the concentrated finish, picking up black pepper and sweet, toasty vanilla along the way. Ready to drink now and over the next couple of years. Locate this wine online or in your area. (2008-09-11)
Magito 2005 Zinfandel California ($18). Liked it! Ripe, certainly, but not overly alcoholic or jammy. With dark cherry and berry flavors accented with toast and a touch of spice. This is my kind of burger wine. A blend of Zinfandel (75%), Syrah, Sangiovese, Petite Sirah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Ready to drink now. Locate this wine online or in your area. (2009-03-19)
Red Truck 2006 Zinfandel Sonoma County ($11). Nice value on a tasty wine, with loads of red cherry and berry flavors, a kick of toasted black peppercorn, and a long, fruity finish. Admirable balance at this price point. Ready to drink now. Locate this wine online or in your area.
