Winery Spotlight: Cadaretta

I recently mentioned a Syrah worth the splurge from Cadaretta, with the promise of more to come from this exciting new Washington winery. So here goes:
Cadaretta is based in the Walla Walla Valley and owned by a long-time Washington family, the Middletons. The family’s roots in the state go back to the 19th century and the timber shipping industry. In fact, the winery takes its name from one of the Middleton’s historic ships, or so the story goes.
In any case, these wines from winemaker Virginie Bourgue are lovely — and well worth seeking out. I think the buzz is building rather quickly, so don’t hesitate if you want to get your hands on these beauties:
Cadaretta 2007 Sauvignon Blanc Semillon Columbia Valley ($22). Delicious, with crisp, racy citrus character — lime, tangerine, light pineapple — balanced against mineral, fresh melon and a touch of grass. Long, mouthwatering finish. Ready to drink now and over the next couple of years. Locate this wine online or in your area.
Cadaretta 2006 Merlot Columbia Valley ($33). A dash of lead pencil aromas mingle with cigar box and cedar notes. On the palate, it’s black fruits — blackberry, plum, currant, along with more spice and cedar, with a full, lingering finish. Ready to drink now and over the next two or three years. Locate this wine online or in your area.
Cadaretta 2006 Syrah Columbia Valley ($35). One of the first releases from this winery (more to come about their other excellent wines!), this Syrah offers pretty currant fruit laced with pepper, anise and tobacco, with toasty oak accenting the silky, focused finish. Ready to drink now and over the next four or five years. Locate this wine online or in your area.
