Pairing: Albarino & Contest-Winning Recipes
The results are in on the annual Rias Baixas Albariño recipe contest that was publicized earlier this year on the Wine Skinny — hopefully some of you entered!
This year’s winning recipes include Spicy Thai Crab & Sweet Corn Fritters, a Smoked Trout Almondine Brandade (this is so up my alley — why didn’t I think of it?), and Pancetta Wrapped Oysters with Broiled Lemons.
The idea was for amateur chefs across the country to take advantage of Albariño’s food-friendliness by creating go-with recipes. Entries were judged on taste, creativity, practicality, and of course, pairing with Rías Baixas Albariño. Judges included Harold Dieterle, Top Chef Season One winner and Chef/Owner of New York’s Perilla Restaurant, and Ray Isle, Deputy Wine Editor of Food & Wine.
You can get the recipes plus a blog recounting the contest judging at www.riasbaixaswines.com.
Here are a couple of Albariños I’ve recently tasted:
Bodegas Couto 2007 Albariño Rias Baixas Serra da Estrela ($17). Pretty and aromatic, with ripe apple, pear, and honeysuckle notes laced with bright citrus and mineral notes that linger on the moderate finish. Ready to drink now. Locate this wine online or in your area.
Martin Codax 2007 Albariño Rias Baixas ($15). Loads of lime peel and mineral notes accent crisp green pear, finishing dry and refreshing. Ready to drink now. Locate this wine online or in your area.
