Pairing: Pinot Noir & Thanksgiving
Yesterday, I wrote about including a Riesling in your Thanksgiving feast. Now I’m moving to my favorite red for Turkey Day.
Pinot Noir works for me because it matches nicely with stuffing, rich potatoes dishes and the turkey legs and thighs, but is also smooth and delicate enough to avoid overwhelming some of the lighter notes of the meal — like turkey breast and veggies. Here are a few affordable choices that I’ve particularly enjoyed lately:
Dashwood 2006 Pinot Noir Marlborough ($18). Racy, slightly tart red berry and currant fruit flavors are laced with a pronounced herbal note and light spices. Ready to drink now and over the next year or two. Locate this wine online or in your area.
Innocent Bystander 2007 Pinot Noir Victoria ($20). Pretty stuff, with smooth black plum and berry aromas and flavors, and dark chocolate, mineral and exotic spices notes that linger on the elegant finish. Ready to drink now and over the next three or four years. Locate this wine online or in your area.
Grove Mill 2007 Pinot Noir Marlborough ($23). Easy to like for its lively red berry and cherry fruit, with just a touch of tartness, and tasty chocolate and anise accents that linger on the flavorful finish. Ready to drink now and over the next couple of years. Locate this wine online or in your area.
The Four Graces 2006 Pinot Noir Willamette Valley Estate ($27). On the light, elegant side, with red berry and pomegranate fruit laced with baking spices, chocolate and a delicate earthy note. Nicely balanced — the kind of wine I could drink everyday. Ready to drink now and over the next three or four years. Locate this wine online or in your area.
Gruet 2006 Pinot Noir New Mexico Cuvee Gilbert Gruet ($28). Delicate and food friendly, with appealing acidity supporting smooth cherry and red berry, fresh earthy notes and light, spicy vanilla. Moderate finish. Ready to drink now and over the next three or four years. Locate this wine online or in your area.
