Australia’s Two Hands winery burst upon the wine world less than a decade ago and quickly became known for their blockbuster Shiraz and Shiraz-blends. In my experience, Two Hands manages that rare trick of creating high alcohol wines (some of them, anyway) that offer more than just a jammy punch. They are unapologetically rich but also complex and structured, with layers of flavors that evolve on astonishingly long finishes.

Like so many (too many) Australian wineries, Two Hands wines — and there’s a wide range of them now – are tagged with catchy names that I doubt I will ever keep straight. But honestly, if you see “Two Hands” on the label, you’re probably in pretty good (wait for it…) hands. Here are some recent tasting notes:

Two Hands 2008 Moscato Barossa Valley Brilliant Disguise ($19, 500ml). Like a New World Moscato d’Asti, with ripe, sweet, mouthwatering apple and peach aromas and flavors that stay fizzy and fresh through the long finish. Ready to drink now and over the next year or two. Locate this wine online or in your area.

Two Hands 2007 Shiraz McLaren Vale Angel’s Share ($30). Exotic aromas and flavors include black cherry, smoke, Framboise, anise, cinnamon, eucalyptus and chocolate — a “wow” wine indeed. With finely integrated tannins and a lush, lingering, plummy finish. Ready to drink now and over the next five or six years. Locate this wine online or in your area.

Two Hands 2007 Brave Faces Barossa Valley ($36). Ripe and supple, with floral- and spice-laced red berry and cherry fruit that picks up cinnamon stick, forest floor and mint and alcohol notes through the moderate finish. A blend of Shiraz (64%), Grenache (18%) and Mataro. Ready to drink now and over the next couple of years. Locate this wine online or in your area.
