Winery Spotlight: Mayacamas Update
Yesterday I wrote about pairing the Mayacamas 2003 Chardonnay with Camembert and Asian Pear. Today, I’ve got updates on the latest releases from this Napa winery. If Mayacamas is not a familiar name to you, it’s because they don’t make a ton of wine, it has limited distribution, and it’s not exactly inexpensive. That being said, Mayacamas is also a winery that you can feel absolutely confident with — they simply don’t miss. So ask your local wine shop about getting a bottle or two — or check out the links at the end of each review (below) for locating the wines online or in your area. You won’t be sorry!
Mayacamas 2006 Sauvignon Blanc Napa Valley ($30). Very nice, with lovely complexity that grabs you with every sip. A spicy white pepper note accents juicy lime, grapefruit and tropical melon, finishing with a hit of crisp minerality. Ready to drink now and over the next two or three years. Locate this wine online or in your area.
Mayacamas 2005 Chardonnay Napa Valley ($35). Fresh and crisp, offering lemon zest and distinct minerality accents to the focused green pear and fig fruit, picking up subtle touches of spice on the concentrated finish. Appealing now but will age nicely for at least another five years. Locate this wine online or in your area. (Robyn’s Picks 08/08)
Mayacamas 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley ($75). Deeply aromatic, with red cherry and plum fruit leading the way and staying focused on the palate, picking up touches of tobacco leaf and rich earthy notes. Nice concentration, building through the full finish. Benefits from decanting now; should continue to evolve in the bottle for 10-15 years. Locate this wine online or in your area.
